Mexico - Parque Nacional Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl

Hiking day #2

We left Mexico City at 7:30am and made a stop along the way for a snack and bathrooms, then back on the road where we reached the park entrance at 10:30am. It was then almost an hour drive back a dirt road to the trailhead.

Because we didn’t start hiking until 11:42am, we altered the path and took a short hike up a hill to get a view of the smoking volcano. The altitude wasn’t as high as yesterday, highest today was 13,480ft. Because of the rocks and steepness, we had to wear helmets.

I did two Michelle things today:

1. Pulled my backpack up to get something out and didn’t realize that my water bottle wasn’t closed. It leaked all over me, but while it was happening I thought my own bladder was leaking 😱

2. While hiking up the mountain, the path was slick with black mud. I was just getting my poles out when my foot slipped and sent me sliding backwards for a foot or more on my hands and feet. I didn’t think I was going to stop. I should have brought my grippy boots instead of my lightweight boots. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Another beautiful day!
